Going Green to Work and Feeling Great!...

In 2004, an estimated 3.2 million cyclists rode their bikes to work at least once a week. That's a 100% increase over the last 10 years. And electric motors bicycles are making it even easier for commuters to leave their cars at home.

There are lots of good reasons to ditch your car and use a road bike with electric motor to get to work.

It's cheaper, it's great exercise, it's fun, it's easy to park, and in some cases, it's faster!

But the most important reason people give for biking to work is protecting the environment.

Carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, and polycyclic hydrocarbons are only a few of the pathogens in car exhaust.

Carbon monoxide, for instance, attaches itself to the hemoglobin in your blood more than 200 times more efficiently than oxygen.

This is bad news for all the tissues in your body when it comes to getting oxygen. It's a slow and steady form of self-suffocation. That sounds like something most folks would want to avoid!

Electic Bicycle Communters

Commuters may be reluctant to give up their cars, but electric assisted bicycles are helping them get rid of this addiction.

Bicycles with electric motors allow getting to work without feeling and looking like you've just been to the gym.

For those who think the commute may be too difficult due to distance or terrain, these bikes make a longer ride or a steeper hill a snap.

Even individuals who have mobility or strength issues can ride an electric bike. Plus, these bikes are quiet. So you can reduce noise pollution while you're contributing to air quality.

Major metropolitan areas are making changes to encourage more citizens to commute on bikes.

The city of Seattle now has 24 miles of striped bike lanes. In the past two years, over 50,000 free Seattle Bicycling Guide Maps have been distributed. In 2004, on a Bike to Work Day, over 10,000 people did in King County alone.

And in that same year, an international symposium was held in Washington, D.C. on the topic of bicycle friendly communities. 

Save the Environment

The result was an action plan signed by participants from all over the globe to promote bicycle friendly communities.

From Capetown in the Republic of South Africa, to Helsinki in Finland, and cities everywhere in between are joining in the effort to save the environment by promoting bicycle friendly policies and infrastructure.

Although a road bike with electric motor does use some energy, it is a tiny fraction of  what even the most economical car uses. A full battery recharge takes roughly four hours and costs about a nickel.

And the Union of Concerned Scientist says that over the past twenty years, fuel economy for vehicles in the U.S. has fallen to a new low.

As manufacturers have taken advantage of loopholes in regulations, the estimated miles per gallon of all types of vehicles has fallen.

In a year, the average bicycle commuter covers 1,992 miles. That's 1,992 miles of quiet, clean, transportation. That's 1,992 miles of fun, exercise, and responsible citizenship.

It's not that hard to change the way you commute. Here's what you do: get yourself an electric motor bicycle, put a dust cover over your car, and join those 3.2 million people as they pedal to work.
