The Electric Bike Kit
"Hear Ye, Bikers! Power Up for
a Transportation Transformation..."
The electric bike kit - In cities around the world, accommodations are being made for
increased bicycle traffic. In 2005, San Francisco adopted a 5 Year Prioritization Program aimed specifically at improving conditions for
cyclists.
Seattle has 2300 bike racks on public sidewalks. Copenhagen, Dublin, and Helsinki are just a few of the signers of the Action Plan for Bicycle
Friendly Communities.
Thousands of cyclists would like to take advantage of these developments. But they have various concerns that keep them from doing so.
There's good news for these folks, though. The addition of an electric bike kit to their
conventional bike will take care of all their worries.
Electric Bike Concerns
Riders are apprehensive about several things. They worry about arriving at work drenched with perspiration and looking disheveled. They are
concerned that the distance is too far or the terrain too taxing.
They wonder if they can keep up with traffic. They're not sure if they're even physically fit enough to try. Electric bicycle conversion kits
can give cyclists, or would-be cyclists, the confidence to get on and go.
An electric bicycle kit is installed on a conventional bike so that the rider can have an extra assist any time
it's necessary. Almost any kind of bike can be converted, including mountain bikes, recumbents, tricycles, and cruisers.
Two Types of Power
The kits come in two types of power delivery systems: power on demand or pedal activated. Power on demand gives the rider the choice to pedal
or not.
The rider can pedal at the same time that the power boost is in effect, but he or she doesn't have to. So going up a hill, the cyclist can
take a breather if needs be while the e-bike does all the work.
The bike rides like a scooter. Pedal activated, or assisted, is like riding a conventional bike: no pedal, no go. But the electric assist
eases the burden, and allows the rider to go faster or farther.
If the thought of installing one of these kits gives you the willies, don't let that stop you from getting one. Your local bike shop can do
that part. For those of you who consider yourselves mechanically inclined, installation should not be a problem.
Unstall Kit in Under an Hour
Most electric motor bicyle kits can be installed in anywhere from a few minutes to under an hour. They arrive at your door with a motor,
battery pack, throttle, and charger. Kits that have a hub motor are especially easy to install, since usually the motor is already on the
wheel.
No matter what kind of kit you ultimately choose, your bike will function just like a regular electric assisted bicycle. You can expect
top speeds of up to around 20 miles per hour, depending on whether you're a skinny Minnie or more like the Incredible Hulk.
It's reasonable to expect a full charge to get you 20 miles or so, again depending on if you call Dallas or San Francisco home. Upgraded
batteries can be had to increase your range by about half again. But those batteries do add extra weight, so those extra miles should be worth
it.
With your trusty conventional bike, and an electric bike kit, nothing should be holding you back from enjoying the
open road. And you'll be one of those cyclists taking advantage of all the improvements in the bicycle friendly communities. You'll wonder why
you waited so long.
